Socially distanced private piano lessons at

Thank you for visiting The Piano Studio website. My name is Mr. Carroll, and I am the full-time teacher and founder of The Piano Studio. My piano performance name is RJ Carroll, so as a teacher, all my students call me "RJ."

The Piano Studio is a two-room studio in my Winchester home. The studio has a waiting room plus a lessons room that has a beautiful-sounding Baldwin grand piano. To teach piano via socially distanced lessons, I teach by sitting more than 8 feet away from the student at the Baldwin grand piano and more than 6 feet away from the observing parent. During each lesson, the piano, the student, and the parent are on one side of the room while I sit on the other side of the room. I have a small table to my right on which I rest my hand to demonstrate hand and finger technique. A music stand is to my left on which is the student's music. Also, I wear a mask and students and parents wear masks. A long, nice looking old wooden ski rests on the floor near the piano to mark the students' part of the lesson room. I wash the piano keys, door knobs, and seats between lessons. The lesson room is air-conditioned for comfortable summer lessons.

I teach students from 5 years old through teenagers and adults.

Most of my piano study was at the Longy School of Music and at the University of Massachusetts. I have been certified to teach music grades K through 12 in the Massachusetts public schools. I have taught piano for more than 20 years. I played piano professionally for 30 years.

What makes The Piano Studio special?

I believe young students make the best musical progress when parents are aware of their youngsters' weekly lesson goals. So, at The Piano Studio, parents observe all their youngsters' piano lessons. Even parents with no musical experience easily learn enough during the lessons to be able to talk to their youngsters at home about lesson goals. (Teenagers age 16 and over may attend lessons without parents, but parents are still welcome.)

I developed a unique, three-pronged, activity-based approach that makes learning to read music easy for students of all ages.

All of my students - including young children - learn how to play with expression and feeling.

I believe in helping students develop repertoire, rather than simply going from piece to piece. That helps students enjoy playing anytime, anywhere.

Lesson Fees & Inquiries

The Piano Studio is open for lessons from 1 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The studio is on summer break each July and each August, but you can still call during these breaks to make inquiries about lessons.

Piano Studio Reviews

Nicolae Duta
R. J. Carroll has been teaching piano to my daughter for over 5 years. He's always been very patient, supportive, and really knows how to connect with kids. My daughter now enjoys playing piano due to R.J. I highly recommend him.

R. J. is a great piano teacher! My 10-year-old son loves his piano lessons every week. He usually loses interest in activities pretty fast, but R. J. has a special gift for engaging him with music that appeals to him.

R.J. brings a wealth of knowledge into each lesson. He teaches my son how to learn and practice, which are great life lessons. R.J. has a great sense of humor, which is very welcoming for a 10-year-old boy.

R. J. involves parents in each lesson, which keeps us involved in our son's progress. I highly recommend R.J. He is a very motivating and effective instructor who brought the love of piano into our home.

I cannot give anything less than five stars to Mr. R. J. Carroll. My son tried other piano teachers, and he was not progressing in technique, repertoire, or motivation. My son really respects his classes now, and he makes sure to be prepared for the next lesson, because that is what R. J. expects.

R.J. exudes knowledge plus commitment to the craft, and his musicianship is fantastic. I am a classical music aficionado myself, and I really enjoy listening to R.J. when he is showing my son how a piece is to be played.

I also appreciate R. J.'s attention to detail and his communication with us parents. I highly recommend R. J. Carroll.

The Piano Studio in Winchester, Massachusetts is run by R. J. Carroll, where he teaches both kids and adults to play the piano.

R. J. is my son's second piano teacher. RJ has been teaching my son for two years. He is an excellent piano teacher who cares not only about technique, but also emphasizes having fun with the piano pieces.

R. J. is patient with the students, and the fact that parents can sit with their children during lessons is a great way to stimulate the students to play music and to practice.

I definitely recommend R. J. as a piano teacher.
